Sometime after his father's apparent death Jonny had a psychological breakdown and became a drug addict and Jonas Venture Jr. with the Pirate Captain find him living alone in Quest Bell One. He's later employed by Hadji to work on a project for J.J.
He is one of the event coordinators at Rusty's Day Camp for Boy Adventurers, going under the name "Action Johnny." There he's reunited with Dr. Z, an old archenemy of his father, which causes Jonny to flip out. Although technically 'clean' of the drugs Jonny still had many emotional issues and was 'downing Xanax like they were Cheetos'. While at the day camp, he may have confessed to dressing as an arch villain and killing his dog, Bandit, all to get attention from his father.
After leaving Quest Bell One he stayed with Hadji while going through a rough drug detox, something which placed strain on Hadji's marriage, almost ending in divorce.
Action Johnny has been attending therapy classes for recovering boy adventurers. He is still addicted to various drugs, and has become a great deal more cynical. He does seem to feel a kinship with the other recovering boy adventurers, though. In these sessions it was revealed his drug habit started young when he raided the drugs in his fathers lab to cope with the stress of his boy-adventurer life. Briefly he showed great progress in these therapy sessions to coming to terms with his past and his dependency on chemicals. But after the death of his therapist he immediately raided the man's cabinets and stole a large stack of prescription pads.
